Allow opposing voices for half measures
In music publishing, it is common practice to need opposing voices for only half a measure. For example, beats 1 and 2 have a half note upper and quarter notes lower, but beats 3 and 4 are just quarter notes. It looks weird to have opposing voices for those quarter notes, when they could be stemmed together. Flipping the stems is one workaround, but sometimes that results in the notes being offset.
