Independent time signatures
Sometimes it's useful to compose two parts of the same piece with different time signatures. The best example I can think of is J S Bach's "Jesus, bleibet meine Freude" ("Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), BWV 147. It has some instrumental parts expressed in 9/8 while others are in 3/4. They go together fine and the method avoids the necessity of endless triplet markings.
